Craigslist is a catchall site that allows users to submit want ad type of posts in almost every field imaginable, including writing jobs. In each city specific craigslist site, there is an area where freelance writing gigs are posted: the writing/editing section under the “Jobs” topic heading, and the writing section under the little “Gigs” section. Writing opportunities are posted real time throughout the day as they are being submitted by clients, and can range from short, no to low pay gigs to long term large contracts.

One of the upsides of craigslist is its continuous updating. Another is it scope: you have literally an entire world’s worth of cities to seek jobs in. For English speakers, this means they can access jobs posted across America, as well as the UK, Canada, Australia, and South Africa. Craigslist is also a great resource because suspicious posts often get flagged and removed before anyone can be harmed by them.

The downside, however is that not every shady post gets caught before someone responds. And there are some real stinkers out there! Also, craigslist suffers from lots of posters who are trying to get a lot for a little – and sadly, most of the time they get it. They ask for massive projects at less that a cent a word and become indignant when freelancers respond to their rate query with a respectable five cents a word.

Worth it? Totally – just because there are some creeps on craigslist doesn’t mean we don’t flourish in its sea of job leads! Just remember to flourish with caution…and never – NEVER – give out personal information, especially home phone numbers or home addresses. Just to be safe!
