Demand Studios is a freelance writing website that employs individuals as article writers, copy editors, title proofers, transcribers, and filmmakers to produce content for a variety of websites, including eHow, LIVESTRONG.COM, GolfLink, AOL and Trails.  Demand Studios is run by Demand Media, a distributor of social media that was founded in 2006.

New writers are able to claim a certain limit of articles at a time from a large article bank.  Articles are separated into a range of categories that include business, person finance, health, relationships and home décor.  For new writers, the typical limit is 10 articles.  Once an article is submitted using the online form, it waits to be reviewed by one of the copy editors.  As soon as it is reviewed and accepted it frees up a spot in your queue and will be paid out in the next weekly payment.  Articles are typically paid at a flat rate of $15, however as of 2/4/09 Demand Studios has started to add articles that can be compensated with residual earnings instead.

Demand Studios should be a staple part of any freelancer’s income sources.  The work is manageable, the community helpful, and the pay worthwhile.  Over the past few months, there have been several small frustrations as the company has expanded, including a slowing of review times and lack of titles to write, however the managing editors and company heads have assured these hang-ups will be corrected in the coming weeks, and already things have started to improve.

The bottom line: Definitely worth the effort.  Also good because you can make an account at both eHow and Demand Studios without issue.

I love Demand Studios! I’m able to work in the mornings, evenings and weekends to supplement my pay from my out of my home job and the very real possibility for increasing my pay exists. I have a limit of 30 articles in my queue and am able to find interesting articles within my range of knowledge and experience to write on.l
For me, Demand Studios is much better than the other online writing sites because of the up front pay; the others I’m registered with are residuals based and those grow very slowly for me. I do not have the time to market my writings on those sites; nor do I have time to rate article after article. Thank you!

  • So far, most of the assignments available to me on DS are only $5 payouts. Is this because I am a new contributor? (I have completed 2 assignments and have 4 more in my queue.) Will higher-paying assignments become available to me as I get more experience with them? Thanks for the info!

@Karen, you are choosing the “fact sheet” type of article, which are short and only pay $5. The normal “about” and “how to” articles are longer and pay $15.

I am writing for DS periodically, and the money is pretty good, but sometimes you get an editor that is a blockhead. I had a perfectly good article declined, and that was after I made the change that an editor requested!

    Overall, it’s not bad, though!
