Bright Hub is an information network that hosts articles across a wide range of subjects, from home office technology to diet and exercise to environmental preservation. It employs writers, copy editors, and managing editors to generate and refine content. As the website states, “Our success is defined simply: we want to give you the power to change the way you interact with the world.”

Articles on the site are divided into topics that are referred to as “Channels.” When a new writer applies, they must specify what channel they want to write for based on their experience and expertise. Once they are accepted and incorporated into a channel, they coordinate with their managing editor on what articles they will write. As of January, 2009, each channel only receives clearance to write a specific number of articles, so titles must be explicitly cleared by the editors ahead of time.

Writers submit their work for review through the Bright Hub online dashboard. It will be published on the site as soon as the editor clears it. Payment is received once a month for articles written the month before, and ad revenue from two months prior is also included in the monthly paycheck. Writers may write for more than one channel after they have been accepted, and can usually gain access to a new channel by emailing the editor.

Bright hub is a nice place to write for because it is more personal than many other sites. You have easy access to editors as well as other members, and there is a strong sense of community. However, due to the recent changes in policy, accepted article titles and submissions have become much stricter, and writers are often limited to writing five or less articles per channel per month. Yet with the competition to claim titles or suggest them, the number is generally closer to 3 articles per channel.

The bottom line: Bright Hub is good place to work, however it only contributes a small piece of the freelance income pie.
